The other ancient medical document, The Edwin Smith Papyrus, is the world's earliest known medical document. It is dated at about 1600 BC. Both of these ancient medical documents write about enema benefits and how cleansing the bowel is beneficial for better health. Enema Cleansing Passage In The Essene Gospel Of Peace, Book One In the Essene Gospel of Peace, Book One Edmond Bordeaux Szekely, the author of The Essene Gospel of Peace, beautifully translates Jesus Christ's teachings. The Essene's write, which Szekely translated, about the angel of water. They say not only is it necessary to cleanse without, outside the body with water, but it is also necessary to cleanse within. Szekely writes that if the insides of a person are unclean, they can be full of horrible abominations. He writes about suffering the angel of water to baptize you also within, "That you may become free from all your past sins, and that within likewise you may become as pure as the river's foam sporting in the sunlight. "Hang it upon the branch of a tree, and kneel upon the ground before the angel of water, and suffer the end of the stalk of the trailing gourd to enter your hinder parts, that the water may flow through your bowels." Ancient primitive tribes from around the world also practiced bowel cleansing to receive the enema benefits that have been experienced for thousands of years. Many practiced this procedure in rivers. There is hardly a region in the world where a water cleanse was not used. These ancient civilizations were using hollow reeds, gourds, horns and other natural devices for water cleansing from early times. Some cleansing devices were made out of a tube attached to a pig’s bladder which acted as a pump action bulb. The enema bags could be best squeezed with two hands, therefore, another person helped with this procedure. Simple syringe enemas or clysters (old-fashioned name for enemas) were in use by the 1400s, and continued to be used into the 1800s. The enema nurse in the above photo is holding the old-fashioned clyster. He is getting ready to administer a water cleanse. The 1600s were quite the popular time for bowel cleansing. Clyster syringes came in a variety of materials and designs. They were made of copper or porcelain, and the rich had syringes made of silver and mother of pearl. Former French King Louis XIV (1638-1715) really helped to popularize the clyster, especially amongst royalty. It is claimed that the King had taken enemas about 2000 times in his lifetime and lived a healthy life. The real increase in usage occurred from the 1600s onwards when the clyster could be self-administered so as to avoid embarrassment for those more shy folks. The clysters evolved in style but the popularity did decrease over time. The bulb enema syringe later replaced the clyster style in the 1800s. It was not until the practice of Dr. John Kellogg (1852-1943), an American medical doctor, that the enema cleansing therapy was rejuvenated. He extensively used colon therapy on some forty thousand of his patients with gastrointestinal disease. He reported in the 1917 Journal of American Medicine, that in all but twenty of those cases, he had used no surgery for the treatment of gastrointestinal disease in those patients. The rest were helped as a result of cleansing the bowels, diet and exercise. Dr. Eli Jones, M.D. (1850-1933), author of Cancer, Its Cause, Symptoms and Treatment However, in the United States, during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, enema cleansing was still regularly used as a standard healing practice for the enema benefits among most physicians and implemented as a common health improvement treatment in most hospitals. During World War II, my Mother-in-law volunteered in her local hospital where a water cleanse or a series of water cleanses were commonly administered to the ailing by enema nurses. But in the 1950s, the use of colon therapy with water gradually started to decrease. This decline over the years was because the time consuming process, mess, social stigma, and less economic feasibility all but removed this effective bowel flushing practice in the hospitals. It was also much easier for the patient to receive a laxative. Then by the end of the 20th century, the colon cleansing therapy gradually started growing again. However, for the above reasons, this health building practice has not resumed in the hospitals. Bowel flushing was also touted for better health, increased wellbeing and as being good for the skin's complexion.
