Parasite Medical Research On Children Linked To Anemia
Parasite medical research is loaded with information on childhood parasitic infections and the physical and mental damages they bring to the human host. Anemia, stunted growth, and cognitive impairment are all mentioned as effects of high parasitic infection.Hopefully, better health prevention education, improved sanitation, and nutritional intervention will decrease this parasite epidemic. Let's also hope more researchers and health care practitioners will realize the efficacy of safe, non-toxic, natural herbal treatments that have proven to be quite helpful in ridding the human host of these unwanted life compromising critters. After all, God provided herbs on our planet which help rid the body of parasites and worms.

Following are a few childhood parasite research studies that might be of interest and value to you.
1. Childhood Anemia Is Linked To Human Worms
Stoltzfus RJ, Chwaya HM, Tielsch JM, Schulze KJ, Albonico M, Savioli L. Epidemiology of Iron Deficiency Anemia in Zanzibari School Children: The Importance of Hookworms. Am J Clin Nutr 1997 Jan;65(1):153-9. Center for Human Nutrition, Department of International Health, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Baltimore, MD 21205, USA. RSTOLTZF@PHNET.SPH.JHU. Summary A representative sample of 3,595 school children from Pemba Island, Zanzibar were tested for iron deficiency and anemia. Authors state childhood anemia is estimated to affect 50% of children in developing countries. Conclusion Infection with malaria, Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm), and hookworms were all associated with worse iron status; the association with hookworms was by far the strongest. Twenty-five percent of all anemia, 35% of iron deficiency anemia, and 73% of severe anemia were connected to hookworm infection; Less than 10% of anemia was connected to A. lumbricoides (roundworm), malaria infection, or stunted growth. Anthelminthic therapy (deworming) was found to be an essential component of anemia control in school children in whom hookworms are endemic, and it should be complemented with school-based iron supplementation.
2. Hookworm Infection Is Linked To Blood Loss And Anemia
Stoltzfus RJ, Albonico M, Chwaya HM, Savioli L, Tielsch J, Schulze K, Yip R. Hemoquant Determination of Hookworm-Related Blood Loss and its Role in Iron deficiency in African Children. Am J Trop Med Hyg 1996 Oct;55(4):399-404.Department of International Health, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Summary Relationships among hookworm infections, intestinal blood loss, and iron status of 203 Zanzibari school children were studied. Conclusion Intestinal blood loss and iron deficiency anemia were strongly related to hookworm egg counts. Blood loss occurred in upper gastrointestinal tract, which is where hookworm resides. Whipworm and roundworm were also common, but did not contribute significantly to intestinal blood loss in the population. In the context of poor nutrition, as exists in Zanzibar and many tropical countries, hookworm related blood loss was found to contribute dramatically to anemia. Deworming was noted as a feasible and essential component of anemia control.
3. Soil Transmitted Worms (Helminths) Remain A Major Threat To The Health Of Children Around The Globe, Mostly In Developing Nations
Wani SA, Ahmad F, Zargar SA, Dar ZA, Dar PA, Tak H, Fomda BA. Soil-Transmitted Helminths in Relation to Hemoglobin Status Among School Children of the Kashmir Valley. J Parasitol 2008 Jun;94(3):591-3. Summary Aim of study wast to determine if there is any relationship between soil transmitted worms and hemoglobin status in school children in the Kashmir Valley in India. Stool and blood samples were collected from 382 male and female school children between the ages of 5-15 from 6 school districts in Kashmir Valley. Conclusion Of the 382 children surveyed, 299 or (78.27%) were infected with Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm), Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) or both. Children infected with these parasitic worms were found to have lower mean values of hemoglobin than uninfected children - indicating the need to implement control measures. 4. Besides Iron Deficiency, It Was Hypothesized That Parasite Infection Contributes To Anemia
Le HT, Brouwer ID, Verhoef H, Nguyen KC, Kok FJ. Anemia and Intestinal Parasite Infection in School Children in Rural Vietnam. Asia Pac J Clin Nutr 2007;16(4):716-23.Summary 400 primary school children from 20 primary schools in Tam Nong district, a poor rural area in Vietnam, were randomly selected. Blood tests and stool samples were taken. Stool exams tested for hookworm, whipworm and roundworm. Conclusion Anemia was noted in 25% of the students. Iron deficiency occurred in 2% of the children. The incidence of intestinal parasites was 92% with the highest prevalence for Trichuris (whipworm) 76%, and Ascaris (roundworm) 71%. Anemia is very prevalent amongst school children in Vietnam. But, it may not be connected to iron deficiency. Trichuris (whipworm) is associated with a doubled risk of anemia. Chronic parasite infection may play a role in anemia, but needs further investigation. Parasites Affect Physical Growth Of Children
5. Deworming Treatment Is Recommended To Prevent Stunted Growth
Andrade C, Alava T, De Palacio IA, Del Poggio P, Jamoletti C, Gulletta M, Montresor A. Prevalence and Intensity of Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis in the City of Portoviejo (Ecuador). Mem Inst Oswaldo Cruz 2001 Nov;96(8):1075-9.Hospital Provincial del Seguro Social, Portoviejo, Ecuador. Summary Stool samples were taken of 151 school children in Portoviejo, Ecuador, to determine the prevalence of soil-transmitted Helminthiasis (worms) and their relationships with anthropometric indices (understanding human physical growth variances). Conclusion Prevalence of soil transmitted worms was 65%, Ascaris lumbricoides as the most common 63%, followed by Trichuris trichiura 10%, and hookworm 1.4%. Heavy intensity parasitic infections were found in 8.5% of the stool samples. Whipworm showed higher worm burdens than roundworm. 16% of the children were below the third percentile for weight, while 27% were under the third percentile for height (stunted). A significant connection was determined between the worm populations in the children and the degree of stunting. This study suggests that the periodic use of deworming drugs should be targeted to preschool and school children to allow for normal growth and to prevent stunted growth.
Parasites Affect Cognitive Function Of Children
6. Trichuris Trichiura Affects Cognitive Function in Jamaican Children
Nokes C, Grantham-McGregor SM, Sawyer AW, Cooper ES, Robinson BA, Bundy DA. Moderate to Heavy Infections of Trichuris Trichiura Affect Cognitive Function in Jamaican School Children. Parasitology 1992 Jun;104 ( Pt 3):539-47.Wellcome Trust Research Centre for Parasitic Infections, Department of Biology, Imperial College, London. Summary A double-blind placebo trial was completed to determine the effect of low to high amounts of Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) infection on the cognitive functions of 159 school aged children from 9-12 years old in Jamaica. Conclusion The expulsion of worms led to a significant improvement in tests of auditory short-term memory and a highly significant improvement in the scanning and retrieval of long-term memory. After 9 weeks of parasite treatment, the children were no longer significantly different from the uninfected Control group in the tested areas of cognitive function. The removal of whipworm was more necessary than the ridding of roundworm in determining the cognitive improvement. Results suggest that whipworm infestation has an adverse effect on certain cognitive functions which is reversible by deworming treatment.
