Meet Thelen Who Was Raised On Raw Milk
I would like to introduce you to my friend Thelen, who will be 93 years old in February of 2009. Now, Thelen's almost 93 years of living are catching up to her, but what a marvelously healthy life she has lived. I am so grateful I was able to chat with this special woman.Thelen's daughter is the piano teacher for my children. While talking about raw milk with our piano teacher, Thelen was brought up. You see, our piano teacher mentioned how her mother was raised on true milk back in Missouri. I said I would love to talk with Thelen about her days drinking this wonderful white health promoting beverage. Thelen was born in 1906 in Buffalo, Missouri. She was one of 14 children. She was raised on tasty milk from cows that loved to graze on fresh grass. Yes, Thelen drank non-treated milk consistently for the first 20 years of her life. Though no food can surpass the nutritional value of unadulterated milk from grass fed cows, some tainted milk can cause disease. Thelen loved drinking the fresh milk from her family cows. In fact, at the age of 14-years-old, Thelen was the primary milker of her family's cows. She would have to milk several cows before she went to school in the morning. She was definitely anxious to leave the family farm and move to Chicago, but no doubt grateful for having access to a highly nourishing food source each day.
Yummy Fermented Milk!
She especially enjoyed clabbered milk. She would place her freshly squeezed milk in a container on her counter and it would naturally sour or ferment in 24-48 hours. The acidity of the milk increases which prevents the growth of harmful bacteria and also encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria. She loved the tangy taste of the clabbered milk. Little did she know what a highly powerfully friendly bacteria rich drink she was consuming. She just knew she loved it.Don't tell anyone, but Thelen never washed the teats of the cows before milking them. Thelen was a very healthy child and grew into a healthy young woman. She was rarely sick and had a hearty constitution that served her well throughout her life. She says, "I was the last one to get sick, and the first one to get better." She does not miss the milking of the cows, but she does miss the raw milk that provided a nutritious foundation for her - one that no doubt greatly contributed to her long and healthy life.
Thelen would pour the fresh squeezed milk in tall silver cans after she milked the cows.
Since there was no electricity on Thelen's farm, they kept the milk cold by placing a milk can with a lid on top, inside a tub that was filled with cold well water. Each morning the milk truck would come by and buy the fresh milk from Thelen's farm and bring it to market.
Unprocessed Milk Played Big Role In History
It is honest to say that civilization rests on the domestication of animals along with the local production of their meat and non-pasteurized and non-homogenized milk. It was the domesticating of animals that allowed people to create settlements and villages. People indeed kept animals for their milk for thousands of years before the advent of grain farming. The truth is that most people alive today in Europe, North America, South America, and substantial areas of Asia and Africa are the descendants of peoples that relied on fresh non-treated milk, its fermented foods, and the meat from grass-fed animals for their dietary needs. Well, many people still live on raw milk around the world, such as in East Africa.
The East African Maasai tribe known for their tremendous endurance, strength and beautiful physiques consume plenty of raw milk along with its fermented products. Fresh milk is a staple food for these still primitive Maasai. The milk contains more total fat and cholesterol than standard milk in the United States. However, the Maasai have low blood cholesterol and are free of cardiovascular and other chronic disease as Ron Schmid, ND, author of The Untold Story of Milk: Green Pastures, Contented Cows and Raw Dairy Products points out.
This beautiful African woman with a superb physique is milking a cow to obtain her precious raw milk which is part of her native diet. Dr. Weston Price studied six African tribes in which there appeared to be not one tooth attacked by cavities, nor a single malformed dental arch. In thirteen other African tribes, he did not meet a single person with irregular teeth. When members of these same tribes strayed from their native diets and started eating the "civilized" diet of white flour, sugar, polished rice, and canned goods, then rampant tooth decay was the result. In the next generation after adopting the European diets, dental arch abnormalities often occurred. At my Amazon book store you will find some excellent nutrition books, including Dr. Weston Price's widely acclaimed Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. Shouldn't we all have access to this basic food, raw milk, that has nourished man and helped to create good health and beautiful physiques for centuries?
Real milk is also a staple food for the Kalenjins, another East African tribe.
The Kalenjins are known to be world class runners that have won about 40% of all the highest international honors available in men's distance running.
People drink non-pasteurized milk from other grass eating animals such as this buffalo. This woman from India is lucky to have this nourishing milk available.
Indeed, true milk is a fantastic food source. Untreated milk was consumed by indigenous people all over the globe as Dr. Weston Price observed. To view peoples that consumed excellent whole unadulterated foods and to observe their beautiful physiques and healthy teeth, please watch the phenomenal nutrition video on my homepage.
