Raw Milk Taste Was Disappointing

by Joann
(New Jersey)

The raw milk I obtained tasted fine going down, but then had a very strong aftertaste that was less than desirable.

I live in New Jersey where it is not legal to package and sell raw milk. However, I recently have been able to get a source of raw milk from Pennsylvania.

I just got my first half gallon and was looking forward to tasting it. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed. I must note that this is the first time in my entire life (31 years) that I have tasted raw milk.

My question is what is the milk supposed to taste like compared to the pasteurized, homogenized milk that I was raised on? The raw milk that I received was more yellowish in color than my typical milk and didn't have any cream on top.

I just don't want to avoid raw milk because this one source did not sell good tasting raw milk.

I look forward to hearing from you.

The Flavor of Raw Milk Varies
by: Kimberly

I agree with the last comments that state raw milk taste can vary.

I found one farm that had the best tasting raw milk. It also had the most cream on top in the spring. I used to drink 3 gallons a week myself, and I purchased one extra gallon of raw milk for homemade yogurt.

But, much to my dismay, in September the milk had an off taste, almost sour tasting. I was quite dissapointed. I thought it was just me, but my mother confirmed it too.

So I was on a quest for my sweet creamy milk once again. This time I traveled east, and I found a farm that provided raw milk from Jersey cows. The raw milk has cream on top and is delicious!

I am, however, paying more than before, but it is well worth it.

Raw milk keeps your immune system strong. My whole family (which won't drink it), has been sick along with people from my work, and yet I am fine and healthy.

I have arthritis and have been taking perscription meds for years, but now I can skip days because I am not in so much pain! Also, your digestion will improve immensely.

I really think you should try different farms until you find good raw milk that has the cream on top and that tastes good and fresh. It will be similar to store bought milk with no after taste, just much more creamy and fresh tasting.

Now that I have had the "real thing," milk from the store tastes like chalk to me.

The benefits of fresh raw milk are well worth it. Your body will thank you for it! Good luck and please don't give up :-}

Raw Milk Taste Can Vary Dramatically
by: Eryn Paige

How unfortunate that your raw milk tastes so undesirable, or at least the aftertaste does.

OK, your raw milk should definitely have some cream on top. If they recently poured the milk, then it should just take several hours for that cream to rise to the top.

The butterfat or cream is what really gives the milk a sweeter taste. Plus the cream is just loaded with great nutrition.

In my raw milk drinking experiences, I have noticed the flavor of raw milk varies a lot from batch to batch.

Right now I am on vacation with my family back in the Midwest. There is a local farm from where we get our raw milk. Within a few days, my family went through a couple gallons of the raw milk and just bought 3 more gallons yesterday. We try to fill up on it while we are here.

I noticed the milk we bought yesterday tasted slightly different from the first 2 gallons of milk we bought. Still good, but just different.

My kids absolutely love the taste of the raw milk and love the longer burning energy it supplies. We do not experience any unpleasant aftertaste.

My son's complexion always improves within just a day of drinking the raw milk. Really amazing!

Back home, there was a supplier of raw milk charging about $10.00 per gallon. Despite the cost, I was so excited to find this source.

But let me tell you, I was so disappointed in the flavor. It really was terrible. Plus, there was no cream on top. I had to wonder just where that cream was going. As I know some unscrupulous farmers take off the best part. Plus, I questioned the diet of the cow.

If I were you, I would definitely look around for a few different sources of raw milk to sample.

Also remember, the cow's diet will affect the flavor of the milk. So you want to be able to find out just what is the diet of the cow. You definitely want that cow to be grazing out in the fields and eating lots of grass. But in the winter they of course won't have access to that fresh grass.

I have obtained raw milk in Arizona that came from a cow that was not eating fresh grass. Now I know the raw milk has the most nutrients when the cow eats the fresh grass, however, I also knew the raw milk was superior to the pasteurized milk - and still full of those precious enzymes, friendly bacteria and more natural nutrients to boot!

The local farmer here in the Midwest said sometimes some of her customers don't care for the fresh raw milk at different times of the season depending on the amount of grass and herbs the cows happen to be eating. People do have different taste buds and different preferences in flavor.

But I don't think the raw milk should taste a lot different than pasteurized milk that you buy in the store.

The raw milk just is so much more satisfying on every level for me. I just feel so satiated when I drink it, it is much more filling.

I hope you find a good raw milk source that satisfies your palate!
