Very Little Juice From My Wheatgrass!

by Lionel
(The Netherlands, Europe)

After some health issues that I have been trying to resolve with the help of wheatgrass juice, I've started to try and learn how to grow and harvest wheatgrass myself.

I've looked at a few videos on how to do this, but I can't seem to find an answer to my problem. I seem to be getting very little juice from my wheatgrass.

I grow a good bunch of wheatgrass (1 big cupful, 5 oz of seed) in a standard size box (using napkins/tissues as a base, according to instructions, rather than soil - the roots grow through the napkins) it takes me about 10 days to grow them to 7" (it's about 4-5 big handfuls of grass blades).

I use water in the mornings and special plant food (90+ minerals) for the evenings daily to give the wheatgrass extra nutrients.

I cut the grass after day 8 and then everywhere it mentions the amount of grass should be sufficient for about a weeks worth of daily 2 oz shots. I have a manual wheatgrass juicer like this one:

Wheatgrass Juicer UK

But, I get barely 2 oz (1 comfortable sized shot) from the whole 4 handfuls!! I try to juice about a quarter handful at a time as to be able to squeeze a lot of wheatgrass juice from the total number of blades, but I feel that I need the whole box to finally get 1 good big mouthful of juice.

I'm really not happy about it because it takes me a lot of time and effort to grow wheatgrass and maintain it and it seems not worth all that effort for such little juice.

Surely this can't be right. I can't seem to improve on the amount of wheatgrass juice, because more simply won't squeeze out (even after throwing the pulp back in again twice!).

I must say I did do it wrong the very first time. I juiced the wheatgrass by moving the handle anti-clockwise, but almost the same amount came out as when I do it the correct way!

Might that have something to do with this problem, perhaps due to insufficient squeeze/pressure motion from the mechanics on the blades??

I have no experience, but if you have any suggestions as to why this might be the case, or any tips to improve the quantity of wheatgrass juice, I would be very grateful!

Thank you,

Lionel

Wheatgrass Growing And Juicing Pictures Might Help Solve Problem - Part I
by: Eryn - Editor Health Banquet

I hope to help you out with your juicing wheatgrass problem.

Thank you for the details you have shared in regards to your wheatgrass growing and juicing.

OK, when I plant about 2 cups of wheat grains, I can juice about 12 ounces of wheatgrass juice, when the wheatgrass is harvested at about 6"-7" tall.

You said you are planting about 1 cup of wheat grains. So I would think you should at least be able to get about 6 ounces of wheatgrass juice from your tray.

Does your wheatgrass quality look similar to this below wheatgrass tray?

Tray of Wheatgrass

Here is a closer up look of the wheatgrass.

Fresh Wheatgrass

I can juice about 2 ounces of wheatgrass with 2 handfuls of wheatgrass. So one ounce wheatgrass juice per handful of wheatgrass. These are the two handfuls of wheatgrass I juiced below.

Two Handfuls Wheatgrass

OK, and below is a picture of my 2 ounce shot of wheatgrass juice produced from the 2 handfuls of wheatgrass.

Two Ounce Shot Wheatgrass

Is your wheatgrass pulp really dried out looking? Here is a picture of what your wheatgrass pulp should look like. This is the pulp produced from 2 ounces of wheatgrass juice.

Wheatgrass Pulp

I show you how to grow wheatgrass at home easily here.

If your wheatgrass blades look like the blades of wheatgrass above, but your tray just has less actual blades of wheatgrass since you used about one cup of wheat seeds instead of 1 1/2 - 2 cups of wheat seeds, then I think your problem must be your wheatgrass juicer.

Check to make sure you have assembled your wheatgrass juicer correctly. The juicer looks beautiful. If you believe it is the juicer not extracting the juice properly, I would call the company and see if they have some helpful hints for you.

Try Growing Wheatgrass In Soil - Part 2
by: Eryn - Editor Health Banquet

I personally own the Hurricane Manual Juicer and just love it. Here is my Hurricane Manual Wheatgrass Juicer video demonstration.

Additionally, I would choose to grow my wheatgrass in soil. It is not difficult at all. The wheatgrass research studies I read used wheatgrass grown in soil. Plus wheatgrass growing guru Ann Wigmore always grew her wheatgrass in soil. I just feel better about that choice.

I hope the wheatgrass growing and juicing information I have presented will help you solve your wheatgrass juicing problem.

Lionel, please let me know if you are able to solve your wheatgrass juicing puzzle.

You might enjoy this page on the importance of enzymes. I have some very good additional enzymes for health pages that will be posted shortly. I believe you will be especially interested in this important topic. The new enzymes pages that will be posted will link off this main enzymes for health page, so come back later and revisit that page.

Also, please study the many pages at Health Banquet, as I believe you will find them highly beneficial.

All the best,

Eryn

Why Do I Get Less Wheatgrass Juice?
by: Tammy Rodriguez

You did an EXCELLENT job answering this growing wheatgrass at home and juicing wheatgrass question Eryn.

I also use "soil" to grow my wheatgrass at home. I actually use vermiculite and liquid kelp for my fertilizers.

I don't get as much wheatgrass juice as you do though. I do have a mixture of grains I am currently using though.

Your grass blades look a lot flatter than mine. Mine are more round.

What type of wheat grass seeds do you use? I'm currently attempting to sprout some barley for barley grass. We'll see how that goes.

More "Juicy" Wheatgrass With Good Soil Or Good Seed?
by: Eryn - Editor Health Banquet

Now this wheatgrass growing at home discussion is getting really interesting.

So my wheatgrass produces more wheatgrass juice than your wheatgrass blades do. Hmmm...

Well, OK, I use Hard White Winter Wheat Seeds. They are the same seeds or grain that I use to make my famous homemade bread with soaked grains recipe.

They are good quality wheat seeds. They are not given the "official organic label," but the store where I buy them says they are close to that "organic" label.

For soil, I just use different kinds from the Home Depot. Sometimes I add in "dirt" from my backyard.

I have not fertilized my wheatgrass soil lately. I know when I use the Azomite fertilizer, that my wheatgrass is even more vividly green and lush. I sell the Azomite organic trace minerals fertilizer at my wheatgrass growing supplies store.

Sometimes I buy the soil with Miracle Grow in it. This last bag of soil I have is called The Flower Shoppe Professional Potting Soil. The bag says "Enriched With Plant Food." Here is a picture of my current wheatgrass growing soil that I am using.

Growing Wheatgrass Soil

That sounds very interesting that you are using the liquid kelp fertilizer and the vermiculite natural mineral fertilizer. Is it powdered or liquid? Why did you decide on it? Do you like it?

Now the shape of your wheatgrass you say is more round. Does it look as lush as the wheatgrass in my pictures. Are you watering it as much? If your wheatgrass is not watered enough, it kind of gets dehydrated, thus producing less wheatgrass juice.

Also, if your wheatgrass looks just as lush as mine, then how is your wheatgrass juicer working?

Here is my Hurricane Manual Wheatgrass Juicer video demonstration which I personally own and love.

Does your wheatgrass pulp look as dried out as my wheatgrass pulp pictures?

Let me know if you figure out a way to increase the juice from your wheatgrass.

And that is so exciting that you are growing barley grass. You will love the barley grass juice and its different and more palatable flavor, at least to me.

I am glad you found my wheatgrass growing at home and wheatgrass juicing answer helpful Tammy! :-)

Time for a shot of wheatgrass juice!

Eryn

Experimenting To Get More Juice From Wheatgrass
by: Tammy Rodriguez

I use liquid kelp to fertilize my wheatgrass. I mix it in the water for watering my wheatgrass. I am not sure if I will buy it again.

I only get about 2 ounces per 1/3 tray of wheatgrass juice. I am growing three trays of wheatgrass at once, and yet I get very little juice.

Your wheatgrass looks more fat but am not sure if that is because the picture is magnified. My wheatgrass is very lush too.

My husband does not like the wheatgrass flavor. He is happy when there is no wheatgrass. But I tell him to drink it anyway because it is good for him, tee hee hee.

Also, my juicer next to the handle gets real warm from juicing my wheatgrass.

I am not having a lot of luck growing the barley grass seed. I got the hulled barley and it will not sprout.

One Handful Cut Wheatgrass Should Ideally Produce One Ounce Wheatgrass Juice
by: Eryn - Editor Health Banquet

Well, sounds like you are doing great with your wheatgrass growing at home in soil. Interesting that you are using the liquid kelp.

Hmmm Tammy, I don't know if my wheatgrass is real big and fat in real life. It does look very healthy and vibrant at its peak harvesting time, 6" - 7" high.

If your wheatgrass looks pretty similar to mine, then you should be getting about 1 ounce of wheatgrass juice per handful of wheatgrass, when that wheatgrass is harvested at its nutritional peak.

There are 2 tablespoons in 1 ounce. If you are only getting about 2 ounces per 1/3 tray of wheatgrass, that sounds very low. You should be getting double that, about 4 ounces per 1/3 tray of wheatgrass. Are you planting about 1 1/2 cups of wheatgrass seed per tray?

Do you have an electric wheatgrass juicer? Just gather up that 1 handful of cut wheatgrass, put it in your juicer and see how much juice you get. Ideally you should get that 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of wheatgrass juice.

Yes, the barley seed, not "hulled" barley, is hard to find locally. You can order 4.5 pounds of excellent organic barley grass seed here. You will be growing barley grass at home in no time.

I know you already know this, but for other guests, here is where I teach how to grow wheatgrass and barley grass at home.

Yes, I had bought "hulled" barley thinking the hull was still intact. But "hulled" means the hull has been removed from the barley seed and the barley seed will then no longer sprout as I found out the hard way and explain about "hulled" barley here.

Here is my Amazon wheatgrass growing supplies store where you can pick out all the wheatgrass or barley grass supplies you need.

Yes, my husband used to complain about the flavor of wheatgrass juice too. So for him, I have to mix in carrot juice with it, and he loves it then. Now, when I run low on wheatgrass he asks, "When can I get some more of that wheatgrass juice?"

Both him and my son love its health building properties and how much better it makes them feel.

Cheers!

Eryn

Will Keep Trying To Get More Wheatgrass Juice
by: Tammy Rodriguez

Yes, I use 1 1/2 cups wheatgrass seeds per tray. I don't have an electric juicer. I'll just keep plugging away...

Thanks for the link for the hulled versus non-hulled barley grass seed.

Keep Up The Great Work Growing Wheatgrass At Home
by: Eryn - Editor Health Banquet

Wow, I would have thought you had an electric juicer since you said your juicer heats up when juicing your wheatgrass, interesting...

Keep me posted if you find out a way to increase your wheatgrass juice output!

Keep up the great work,

Eryn
