Why Does My Wheatgrass Juice Taste Bad?

by Jo

I found your website while I was researching wheatgrass. I hope you can answer a growing wheatgrass at home question.

After tasting wheatgrass juice at at friend's house, I was hooked! The flavor was so sweet...almost too sweet. She has wheatgrass delivered every week to her home.

I decided I would grow my own wheatgrass at home. Well, it grew great...juiced it...and yet the taste was terrible!

I bought the plain top soil, gave it water and indirect sunlight and it grew so beautifully! Is the soil the problem, if the taste is so bad?! I don't like using peat moss as it is not sustainable.

HELP! I really want to continue to do this. I bought a wheatgrass juicer, the Z-Star Manual Juicer and I really like using it!

Thanks,

Jo

Don't Tell Anyone, But I Really Don't Care For Taste Of Wheatgrass Juice
by: Eryn - Editor Health Banquet

Wow, great question about the bad taste of wheatgrass juice.

OK, with my own experience, no two batches of fresh wheatgrass juice ever taste identical. I do prefer to harvest my wheatgrass between 5"-7" inches tall. I notice the longer it gets the more bitter the taste.

I have not been able to pin point differences in the wheatgrass juice taste based on different soil, or grain.

You know what is funny Jo, is that I do not enjoy the flavor of wheatgrass juice. So you know, I must really like the benefits of wheatgrass and its liquid chlorophyll because I do not get excited at all over the wheatgrass flavor.

Sometimes I juice my wheatgrass for my neighbor friend, and she loves, loves the wheatgrass flavor as does my son. So we must really have different taste buds.

My trick is to dilute the wheatgrass juice with water or sometimes carrot juice and it goes down without a hitch.

I actually don't mind the taste of the barley grass juice as much - a little more palatable. Though wheatgrass juice is more popular, the barley grass juice is quite healing too.

If I were you and I really could not stand the wheatgrass juice flavor, I would first make sure I have a good organic or close to organic wheat grain. Then I would find out what kind of grain the other company uses that delivers the wheatgrass. Find out if they enrich their soil or learn more about their soil if you can.

Is it a hard red wheat grain or hard white winter wheat grain that this company uses? Then I might experiment with different soils myself. I just use Home Depot potting soil. Sometimes I buy it with Miracle Grow in it. Sometimes I mix it with soil from my back yard.

My first instinct is to check the quality of your wheat and then it will be a process of elimination and experimentation. Don't give up!

Sometimes I would just add Azomite organic minerals that I sell at my website with other wheatgrass growing supplies.

With the Azomote I would get more rich growth. I talk more about the Azomite and how soil affects growth of wheatgrass here. Lately, I am happy without fertilizer. Maybe it is time to buy some more.

Let me know if your testing and wheatgrass growing experimentation results in a better tasting wheatgrass.

Harvest Wheatgrass At 5:00 PM For Sweeter Taste
by: Tammy Rodriguez

A farmer friend of mine told me that if you give your wheat grass "natural" light... which means I just set it in front of my picture window, the grass stores up sugar all day long to hold it through the night.

He said the grass juice will be its sweetest if harvested at 5:00 p.m. He raises grass fed beef, so I believe he knows. He tastes his grass so he knows what the cows are eating. I have noticed a definite difference in the taste depending on harvest time. Also, the first growth seems to taste sweeter than subsequent ones.

Flavor Of Wheatgrass Varies Throughout Day
by: Eryn - Editor Health Banquet

Your idea you received from the grass fed cow farmer for harvesting a sweeter tasting wheatgrass sounds great! Gotta love a farmer who would sample his own grass!

I will have to experiment to see if I notice a difference in wheatgrass juice flavor, and if so, if I prefer that sweeter flavor at night.

That is a great story Tammy! I will post back here if I notice a difference in wheatgrass juice taste based on harvest times.

I have a new batch of wheatgrass growing right now on my kitchen counter. It should be ready to harvest in about 3-4 days. I will definitely try out your 5:00 PM harvesting recommendation.

Thanks again for sharing your grass growing knowledge!

Is Spelt Grass Juice Unusual?
by: Anonymous

I just had a shot of my first spelt grass harvest ever, and I was shocked with the taste of it. It was 10x sweeter than the wheatgrass shots I get at the 3 different juice bars in town.

Also, the spelt juice was a darker shade of green and very watery, not as dense. However, the smell smelt about right I guess.

I bought the spelt seeds online, and am a bit paranoid I got duped. When I compare my "organic spelt grain" to all the seeds online, they look quite different too.

My spelt grain are very light in color and weight, very dry and fragile, and they look kinda dead and old. It's claimed to be some ancient strain?

Are these characteristics of spelt seeds and spelt grass juice unusual?

Spelt Grass Juice Does Not Sound Too Unusual
by: Eryn - Editor HealthBanquet.com

I would not be concerned about your spelt grass juice tasting sweeter than your wheatgrass juice. Each cereal grass juice tastes a little different. In fact, each of my batches of wheatgrass juice tastes slightly different!

Barley grass juice tastes much more bitter than the wheatgrass juice. I don't mind the flavor, and I enjoy drinking both the wheatgrass juice and the barley grass juice.

All of the cereal grasses grown from the cereal grains are very nutritious, including the spelt juice.

Perhaps your spelt juice seemed more "watery" because their is more moisture in your blade of grass. Maybe you have a very efficient juicer like my favorite Hurricane Manual Juicer.

Ann Wigmore really is the one who popularized the wheatgrass juice. And I was very struck to read that reportedly Jesus Christ mentions the tender grass of wheat as being the most perfect among all seed-bearing herbs.

I just so happened to have some Vita-Spelt grain in my pantry. Vita-Spelt is the same as spelt. You can see how nice it looks in the below picture. I have compared it to my wheatgrass seed. The spelt grain color is a darker colored brown compared to the golden wheat grain seed. The spelt grain is also a slightly longer grain than the wheatgrass seed.

Spelt Grain Versus Wheat Grain

The cereal grass seeds should look more plump and healthy looking. Their positive visual appearance is a sign of their good growing conditions. I don't believe a healthy spelt seed should look all dried out or dehydrated looking.

Despite the described poor appearance of your spelt seed, you were able to grow the spelt grass, so at least that is good. Maybe it is the power of those ancient spelt seeds!

Spelt (Triticum spelta) is a sub-species of common wheat. Actually, spelt is called an ancient grain because it is one of the oldest of cultivated grains. The spelt juice just is not as popular as the wheatgrass juice.

You can always purchase your spelt seeds or spelt grain from another supplier and test them out to see if you prefer them over your current spelt grains.

You have inspired me to grow some spelt grass to see what I discover. I would like to see if my spelt grass juice is much sweeter than the wheatgrass juice flavor, like you experienced.

Larry, I hope my information will help you gain a better understanding of what is "unusual" or "not unusual" about spelt grain and its spelt grain juice. Keep up the good work!
