Will Cut Wheatgrass Grow Back?

by Jennifer

I was just reading your wheatgrass information. I have recently begun experimenting with wheatgrass and I have a question about growing wheatgrass that I was hoping you could answer for me.

Once you cut the wheatgrass, will it sprout back? And if so, can you continually harvest it or do you have to constantly re-plant it?

Thank you in advance for any growing wheatgrass information you may be able to provide!

Jennifer

Wheatgrass Grown In Really Healthy Soil Grows Batch After Batch - Part I
by: Eryn - Editor Health Banquet

Yes, after you cut the wheatgrass, if you have real healthy soil, it will grow back again. It will continue to grow for a second and third harvest after cutting.

Now remember that research studies show the grass is at peak nutrient levels when it is 6"-7" inches high. But, I absolutely cut that second and third batch and drank it and I felt the goodness from it.

Also, when I first started juicing wheatgrass I bought the Organic Wheatgrass Kit without the Hurricane Manual Juicer available at Amazon. This Organic Wheatgrass Growing Kit comes with the Hurricane Manual Wheatgrass Juicer.

Azomite Organic Trace Minerals come with the wheatgrass growing kit. With using those added powdered minerals, the wheatgrass kept growing, batch after batch. I could not believe it. About 3 batches.

You can order 2 lbs. of Azomite at Amazon or 44 Lbs of Azomite - Organic Trace Mineral Soil Additive Fertilizer.

Healthier Soil Equals Healthier Wheatgrass - Part 2
by: Eryn

Now, I just use the soil from Home Depot, sometimes the soil with Miracle Grow in it - sometimes I mix it with my own back yard soil. But from personal experience, the Azomite was really something. I have not bought it lately, as I am more than happy with the wheatgrass I grow without it. Without super healthy soil, I get about one growth of wheatgrass. I feel plenty of wheatgrass benefits grown just from the soil I use.

However, just goes to show you how healthy soil really affects your food source.

Also, remember the wheatgrass research studies where efficacy of wheatgrass is communicated. In those studies, I did not read about the soil being fertilized. So great things happen with just your regular soil you use too, when growing wheatgrass. Wheatgrass does a great job of extracting the nutrients out of the soil...But you cannot deny how healthier soil equals a healthier plant.

Don't worry so much about having the perfect soil when you start. Just start. You can always enhance your soil later as you evolve in your wheatgrass growing, and yes you will experience the power of wheatgrass juice with the soil you choose to use.

Interestingly, my Mother-in-law in Wisconsin, grew some barley grass indoors using her just normal backyard soil. Boy that soil must have been nourishing. She "planted" her barley seeds in her tray in the earlier fall. That barley grass just kept growing, batch after batch after batch. She finally just put the barley grass tray outside. It was pretty funny. Maybe they should start selling Wisconsin soil!

After the good quality grass stops growing back or does not look so good, you toss out the old mat of grass with its roots and start the process all over again with new soil and seeds.

When your wheatgrass is done growing and you have finished harvesting it, you will take out the wheatrass mat from your wheatgrass tray. And guess what, there is hardly any soil left. Where did it go? It was absorbed by those roots!

Sometimes, if there is a bit of older grass left on those mats, I give the remainder to my chickens and they absolutely love it and eat it all in a short period of time. Otherwise, you can just toss it or put it in your compost pile.

Usually, I just harvest that first batch - since I am not using top top soil.

I do want to experiment with worm castings soil, just have not got around to it yet. Maybe it is time to buy some more Azomite.

I hope that helps Jennifer!

Eryn
